Description and operating principles of POLYSITE® implantable ports

POLYSITE® is an implantable system that allows injectable drugs to be administered easily. It is placed directly under the skin, usually in a discreet and easily accessible location (near the thorax). Thus, by simply injecting this location through the skin, drugs can enter the blood circulation

The system is comprised of two parts (fig. 1):

the upper part of the subcutaneous injection port includes a silicone septum(membrane) designed to receive multiple punctures (or injections).
a thin flexible tube (the catheter) the free end of which is placed inside the vein, the artery or a cavity (peritoneal or other), or, alternatively, in the intrathecal or epidural space. The other end is connected to the port with a fastening ring.

Because all POLYSITE® components are completely concealed under the skin, no part of the system can be accessed when it is not in use.

The illustration (fig.2) shows how the drugs enter the circulation after injection, via the port and the catheter.

A special needle, known as a Huber needle (fig.3), connected to a syringe or perfusion, is inserted into the port through the skin and the septum, given that the needle only passes through the skin, you only feel a slight pricking sensation. When the treatment is complete and the needle withdrawn, a dressing is applied for a maximum of 12 to 24 hours. This dressing is then removed: you can then perform all your usual day-to-day activities, including showering and bathing.

For how long will you need to wear your POLYSITE®  implantable port?

This length of time depends on the duration of your treatment and medical prescriptions. The implantation site is usually kept for three to four months after all your treatment is completed. However, if the site bothers you, tell your doctor.
