100 % safe: protection of the point and shaft of the needle (23/02/2005)
Article, Capital Equipement Médical Spécial Euro Pharmat, issue 81, October 2004
Blood-exposure accidents: pricking or percutaneous contact.
A Blood-Exposure Accident is defined as any percutaneous contact (pricking, cuts), mucus contact (eyes, mouth) or skin lesion contact (eczema, exposed cuts) with blood or a biological fluid containing blood.
The average risk of transmission subsequent to percutaneous exposure to the blood of an infected patient is:
HIV : 0.3 %
Hepatitis C : 2 à 3 %
Hepatitis B : 2 à 40 %
Several publications have shown that it is possible to prevent this risk, and that the use of safety equipment contributes significantly to its reduction.
Implantable catheter ports: a high-risk procedure
Each year in FRANCE, more than 150,000 Blood-Exposure Accidents (BEA) occur. If we draw up a ranking of the BEA risks of clinical procedures, we can see that the fitting of catheter ports is one of the most dangerous. The incidence is 25 pricking accidents per 100,000 procedures, while the average (for all invasive clinical procedures) is only 4.72 pricking accidents per 100,000 procedures, that is, a risk 5 times greater.
POLYPERF® Safe is currently the only Huber needle that is 100 % safe. Once locked, the piston protects both the point and the shaft of the needle.
Healthcare staff therefore do not:
run the risk of pricking themselves (no rebound effect when the needle is withdrawn) run the risk of coming into percutaneous contact with the shaft of the needle
In addition, in order to make the installation of the Huber needle on the implantable catheter port as simple as possible, the POLYPERF® Safe system has been designed to provide healthcare staff with complete visibility of the injection area.
Fine closed-cell foam placed between the skin and the POLYPERF® Safe system ensures patient comfort and the stability of the system on the skin..
Lastly, each POLYPERF® Safe system is equipped with colour coding (brown: 19G, yellow: 20G, black: 22G) relating to the diameter of the Huber needle.
